we knit, we marched, we started a movement

It was a sea of pink pussyhats - 500,000 marched in Washington, DC (and nearly 3,000,000 worldwide!). The vast crowd all marching together was certainly a hopeful sign that we have an enormous, energetic, movement starting the important work of taking this country back. Together we marched for women's rights, AND in outrage against everything else we know we're going to be fighting this racist, misogynist, insatiable narcissist hellbent on destroying our country for. And by everything I mean…

knitting at the edge of the apocalypse

With the universe collapsing into the singularity that is Trump, we have 2 choices - run (!!!) or stay and fight. On the morning of November 9th, I wanted to run like hell and leave this godforsaken country to fend for itself. For better or worse, I'm stuck here for the time being, which gives me no other choice but to stay and fight. But hey - my needles are sharp and I've got a huge mess of pink yarn to pick from soooo... pussyhat project here I come!

VK Live 2017

What a weekend! This was my fourth year attending Vogue Knitting Live in New York. The annual pilgrimage to the Marriott Marquis every January has become a ritual. It is always hugely inspiring to meet and learn from other knitters and designers. I am reminded of how many ways there are to approach garment design, from the sculptural aspect of making a 3 dimensional object, to creating a graphic pattern using the basic motifs and building blocks of Scandinavian design. But beyond the specifics of technique, each teacher dropped little pearls of wisdom from years of searching for inspiration or finding solutions to design problems. Below are a few unexpected treasures picked up in the classes and lectures over the weekend.

from swatch to sketch to sweater...to book!

Bing. Bang. Boom. Actually - it wasn't that easy. There was more than a little panic and mayhem that accompanied having 4 designs selected for 60 Quick Knits for Little Kids a year ago. And a lot of knitting to do in a very short amount of time. Hoo boy! But all these months later, it's quite rewarding to see the finished product. I can hardly believe it!

change is good

Oh me oh my - is it always so hard to let go of a trip? Last week my husband, Eric, and I took a rare vacation (sans offspring) to celebrate a (major) anniversary. We were originally headed to Big Sur - one of our favorite spots on the planet.  We had been with the kids a few years back, fell in love, and promised ourselves we would return.  A few days before we were scheduled to leave, I heard horrible news.  In the middle of the endless news cycle of election year mayhem, to which I am hopelessly addicted, there was a quick mention of a devastating wild fire near Big Sur.

favorite color?

Remember when you were little and everyone asked what your favorite color was? Actually, I don't remember anyone asking me that question - ever. But I ask everyone and many people can readily proclaim their favorite color because each of us is drawn to certain colors - consistently. I love almost every shade of blue. In fact, my son has several middle names - one of which is Blue. It's the color of the morning sky. It's the color of the night sky. It's the color of the ocean. Blue is the color of forever.

Hartington

Finished. Finally. Love. It was a bit of indulgence to take the time to knit a pattern I did not write, but lessons were learned.

1. Never leave home without a row counter.

2. If you're going to leave a project on the shelf for 18 months,, take good notes before setting aside (including needle size and last row knit) and pin it to the garment.

3. Brush hair before photo shoot. Or at least look in a mirror.
